We study a functional method to extract the V−A condensate of dimension 6 from a comparison of τ -decay data with the asymptotic space-like QCD prediction. The radiative B → τ + τ − γ decay is investigated in the framework of the Standard Model. When only short (short and long together) distance contributions are taken into account, the Branching Ratio is found as 9.54 × 10 −9 (1.52 × 10 −8), for the value of the cut δ = 0.01 imposed on the photon energy.

Until recently, determinations of αs(MZ) from hadronic τ decays and the analysis of short-distance-sensitive lattice observables yielded results which, though precise, were not in good agreement. I review new analyses that bring these into good agreement and provide some details on the source of the main changes in the τ decay analysis.
